IJ Start Canon PIXMA MG5380 Configuration– The MG5380 lacks a 6-ink engine on the lowest-ink MG6250, and the tank’s film scanner as a Top-End MG8250, but for most home users it strikes the perfect balance between quality and affordability.
All this is gloss-black, with 150-sheet input trays front and rear, and automatic opening output tray. It has USB 2 and Wi-Fi connectivity, a PictBridge port and a media card reader, plus a CD tray. MG5380 is high enough on the scale to include 3in TFT, with three buttons below it, with which to navigate the large icon-LED menu system. You can’t get a half-button, half-touch interface of the most expensive models, but it’s easy enough to control for copies and scans.
There are several clean inclusions in the menus. Cloud printing is now available, so you can view and print images from a Picasa profile or from a Canon own Image Gateway directly on the printer screen. The printer has a set of paper templates that are stored so that you can print, for example, your own tabular or graphic paper. And it has a quiet mode that really works – it more than halves the print speed, but eliminates the most annoying high noises.

This printing engine barely changes from last year and is the same as in the standalone iP4950, which means a print speed of 11.3 ppm in mono and 6.1 ppm in colour. A 6 x 4in photo in top quality arrived at 47 seconds, and A4 in 1min 38secs. The individual dye and pigmented black inks mean that the text is thick and solid, while the pictures have all the puncher, contrast and detail that we expected. HP offices are better with documents, but there is still no better choice than PIXMA for home photo printing.
The good news is that the scanner, before the weakest element of the Canon range, is actually quite impressive. Our test photo at 300ppi was sharp and full of details, with only the brightest colors faded lightly. The text was perfectly captured, even at 150ppi, and he lifted the ultras of our test schedule, which many all-in-they struggled with.
MG5380 uses the same five inks as most of the PIXMA range, and with each of them available from Amazon for about £9 Inc VAT, prints works around 3p for mono and 8.4 p for color. 6 x 4in photo will cost around surely there are many cheaper printers, so keep in mind that you pay for this quality. Avid photographers may want to step up the £180 MG6250, which adds extra grey ink for superb monochrome prints.
But for most people, MG5380 is the entire printer you’ll ever need. It’s a reasonable price of £129, offers superb photos and good document quality, and all-speed little inkjet devices can hope to match. If you don’t do regular photo printing, it’s probably too expensive considering the running costs, but if you want the best of both worlds, you just won’t find a better All-rounder inkjet than this one.
